Demo Station

This is a section of the site where we look at the demos that are made available during the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Marketplace, Wii Shop and eShop updates from the previous week before singling out those worthy of praise or humiliation.

UFC Undisputed 3 (Xbox 360/PS3)

FUCK THIS GAME!

Let me take you back a few years to when my friends and I would religiously play the WWE SmackDown! series of games every day throughout high school. The big hook was that we knew who all the characters were, what their signature moves were and that the control system was fairly simple: Square to block, Cross to punch, Circle to grapple and Triangle to run with the should buttons being reserved for the signature moves and opponent targeting. Friends of ours, who had little to no knowledge of the WWE universe or the controls, could jump into the game, with a little coaching, and stand toe-to-toe with the rest of us.

Then everything changed when THQ changed the control mechanism making it even more convoluted than it needed to be. We just wanted to have fun pretending to be the WWE Superstars we saw on screen, pulling off all the signature moves quickly and easily making ourselves feel like the bad ass we obviously weren't, not get our asses kicked because we couldn't remember which of the button combinations allowed us to protect our heads whilst trying to punch our opponents off of their shoulders.

UFC Undisputed 3 turned me off right from the start when it revealed that each of the face buttons struck out with a different appendage, and this could further be modified by holding either of the left shoulder buttons whilst remembering to use the right shoulder buttons to block an incoming attack coming in at chest/head height or aiming for the knees. So you have 4 "basic" attacks, which can be modified by using two of the shoulder buttons, bringing the number up to 12, whilst trying to block with another 2 buttons, and advance/retreat on your opponent with the left stick and trying to grapple your opponent with the right stick in either a minor or major (??) way. I haven't even begun to mention the combo's that are available either!

I appreciate that these guys have spent many hours and made many sacrifices in the pursuit of their craft but I just want to fight a guy without the need of inputting many hours memorising extensive combo lists. I spend enough time in real life doing that kickboxing to make me not want to do it on a computer game too!

The character I was using seemingly had more moves to memorise than the entirety of the Street Fighter, Tekken and Mortal Kombat rosters combined which to a new comer to the series is akin to depositing the novice player in a well and expecting them to climb out.

Unless you are a hardcore UFC fan stay the hell away from this game, it will not make you feel welcome.

Puddle (PS3)

It's LocoRoco!

Seriously, it's LocoRoco minus any charm, humour, exploration and appeal!

I tried to like this game, I really did but when all I can think about how this game, with its short levels and simplistic controls (L2 and R2 tip the world), would be better suited to a handheld device rather than a games console I was never going to be sold.

Especially considering I have Rolando (2008), LocoRoco (2006) and LocoRoco 2 (2008) sat on my shelf and completed I can't help but feel that Konami is a more than a little late to the rolling-things-through-a-world-by-tilting-the-world (or RTTAWBTW if you will) genre.

Save yourselves some money, get any of the other three games mentioned instead, they should be around the same price point by now (if not less) and are much better.

Section 8: Prejudice (PS3)

What do Killzone, Halo, Warhammer 40K, Call of Duty and Resistance all have in common?

They are all ripped off by this game!

The jet packs from Killzone, the armour from Warhammer 40K, the tutorial from Call of Duty, the pelicans (not to mention plunging to the earth & sticking the landing) from Halo and the Chimera power cells from Resistance all made an appearance in this demo, and thats just what I saw during my 30 minute time limit!

WOW!

Section 8 just feels like the developers had no original ideas of their own and decided that the best idea would be to steal the better parts of other games and lump them together to create a mess of awesome. Lazy, but awesome.

The one thing I did like was the ability to lock onto a moving target during battle, precise aiming is something the PC crowd will always have over the console users and whilst it does take time to recharge after use, it is still a welcome addition in the console arsenal.

Overall the game, whilst being devoid of any real new ideas, is a bog standard FPS. There are better ones out there, play them instead.
