Dish's Stack - Marvel and DC Comics 18/01/12

Justice League #5 becomes the first title of the New 52 to ship late, as it is going to be delayed until next week.  Marvel more than make up for their competitor's shortfall, as this week I pick up a big fat eight comics from their releases this week ("big fat" relatively speaking of course, a couple of months ago that many Marvel comics in a week was standard for me), including another three(!) Spider-Man comics, Daredevil and the penultimate issue of Ghost Rider!  My lone DC comic this week is Batman!  Read about these and more after the jump.

Amazing Spider-Man #678
ASM two weeks in a row?  You spoil me Marvel!
The last two issues have been different, with last week's issue being the first part of a Daredevil crossover, and the issue before that being from the Sinister Six's perspective.  This issue comes back to being all about Spidey and the city he loves.  Suitable, yet ironic, then, that this is part one of a double bill that will tell the tale of Peter Parker/Spider-Man attempting to save the city: from himself!
Peter is given a glimpse of 12 hours in the future, and must do all he can to try and prevent it - high-stakes sci-fi? Love it!

Avenging Spider-Man #3
After the first two issues of this series, it was glaringly obvious that this is a book all about the art, which is some of the finest I have seen in the year or so I have been reading comics.  But to say the story suffers would be unjust; this is merely a book with a plot written so as to best show off the incredible artwork, which is a skill unto itself.
Last issue saw Red Hulk stabbed through the chest by the champion of Subterranea, and is, to all appearances, dead... Though I doubt he will be that way for long, and he and Spidey will surely save the day!
Praise/justification for the writing aside, I did feel like it could speed up a little, or give us a little more book for our (4) buck(s)!  As next month will see Spider-Man team up with Hawkeye, this will be the conclusion of this arc, so a more forward-moving plot is likely to come this week anyway.

Daredevil #8
Part deux, of the Spider-Man/Daredevil team-up.  Black Cat has been accused of breaking into Horizon Labs and stealing some hologram tech but, since Spider-Man was with her in another location at the time, she is innocent!
Daredevil teamed up with Spidey to try and solve this mystery, while Black Cat herself was breaking free from the clutches of the NYPD - not exactly helping her claims of innocence.
Expect more witty banter and high-flying, agile competitiveness from the two who wear red, and, of course, the unraveling of the case's threads.

Fear Itself: The Fearless #7
I assumed last issue would contain the fight between Crossbones and Wolverine, but it appears to be in this week's issue - so I will say again that I am expecting awesomeness, and anything less will be disappointing, especially having waited an extra issue for it..
Last issue also revealed Valkyrie's motivations for collecting The Chosen's hammers, which is that Odin promised her she could go to Valhalla in eternal rest.  It appears the All-Mother is planning on upholding this promise, and has said she will ensure Valkyrie's death if she collects all eight hammers.
There is also a pretty big fight going on between the Avengers and Sin and her lackeys, though that took up a large chunk of last issue, so i expect that to be resolved relatively quickly.
I am still enjoying this series, but recently that has had more to do with the bad guys' involvement, since Valkyrie hasn't done much other than dump exposition on us for the last couple of issues; hopefully that will change this week.

Ghost Rider #8
I really didn't like last month's issue of Ghost Rider.  It felt really cheesy with it's odd villains and cameo from Hawkeye; so i sure am glad this is part two of that story!
This being the second to last issue makes me slightly more eager to read it, as I am wondering just how this book will end, and whether Alejandra is likely to feature again in the future or will just fade into comic obscurity.  Alejandra will also appears in Venom's mini-event, which I will speak more of further down the page, but I will say that I hope she is more of the badass from earlier in this comic's run, and drops the introspection..

Moon Knight #9
It seems so long since I've read a Moon Knight comic that i had to check i hadn't missed one, but apparently it has just been a little while!
At the end of last issue we saw that Moon Knight's trap on Count Nefaria had been reversed, and the Avenger was going to be the one surprised!  If I were a gambling man, I would bet that this in fact is the trap, and Moon Knight will be the one on the up after this encounter, but that's just me being a little meta..
Previews have teased that the battle for L.A. will "claim a life" (though not necessarily that someone will die, though that may be me reading into it too much), and that this will have an effect that will spread throughout the Marvel Universe..
This was my Most Improved series of 2011, and it really upped its game after a slow start.  Here's to Moon Knight continuing its upward trajectory into 2012!

Thunderbolts #169
After last issue's foray into what is going on with the present-day Thunderbolts, this week's issue goes back to focusing on the much more interesting time-hopping bunch!
After committing, solving and stopping the London Ripper murders in Victorian times, the T-Bolts remain in England, but are now in Medieval times, and encounter members of King Arthur's court.  They are unaware, however, that another Thunderbolt has joined them on their time-adventures, and Ghost is watching their movements carefully, in an effort to try and get them back to present day.

Venom #12
This is the final build-up issue before next month's mini-event kicks off, and Flash is currently AWOL with the Venom symbiote and Red Hulk hot on his trail!
Flash is on his way to Las Vegas to fulfill a task for Crime-Master, who is aware of Venom's current alter-ego, and has threatened to kill Betty, and anyone else Flash cares about if he doesn't carry out this mission.
I have really been enjoying Venom, so I am quite eager to find out more about the upcoming event, and hopefully this issue will give some information away, or at least set things up nicely for the first issue in February.

Batman #5
While investigating the Court of Owls, Batman inadvertently stumbled into one of their traps, and is currently in mortal danger as their assassin (The Talon) comes closer to killing the Dark Knight.
Last issue gave some unexpected insight into Bruce's childhood, and explained how he can make himself so detached from the cases/crimes he investigates - it was a very nice touch.  It is also refreshing to see that Batman is not the infallible crime-fighter that he usually appears to be, and that the Court always seem to be one step ahead of him - or several generations as it would seem.
This has been one of my favourite DC comics, so I'm really hoping it keeps up the high standard with this first issue of the new year.

Dish Out!

Dish's Stack is where i talk about the comics i will be buying this week!  Judge my taste all you like, but that's what this is! I will normally focus on my thoughts of previous issues and possible developments, but nevertheless be wary of minor (or possibly major) spoilers if you do not keep very up-to-date with series or previews, but I'll do my best not to reveal anything too surprising
