Top 5 TV Sidekicks

The heroes of TV shows often have the problem of being fairly boring, what with all having the same 'I must save everyone' complex, always choosing self sacrifice over a decision that actually makes sense, and this can get very irritating and that is where the sidekick comes in. Someone to make up for the heroes failings, and a way for the show to have a bit more fun with a character. Today I will be looking at my 5 favourites from the not-so-unsung sidekick crowd.

5. Ando from Heroes
It would be easy to become resentful or jealous when your absent minded best friend gains the power to control space and time, and becomes a bona fide super hero. But instead Ando is the perfect sidekick, keeping his friend motivated and helping in every way he can. Of course you may wonder what could a guy who controls time possibly need help with. Well, driving of course!

4. Al from Home Improvement
Al Borland from Home Improvement was the perfect sidekick for his co host in 'Tool Time' the show within the show. He was the sensible, grounded one keeping Tim from killing himself or burning down the studio. With his signature catch phrase "I don't think so, Tim", his rugged manly beard and sensible nature it's surprising that his plaid shirts could contain such awesomeness.

3. Sock from Reaper
So your best friend comes to you one day and tells you that his parents sold his soul to the devil and now he is a bounty hunter for hell, what do you do? Take him to the hospital? Talk to his parents? Knock him over the head and hope that solves his delusions? Well if you're Bert Wysocki from Reaper then the answer is none of the above. You of course believe your friend without question and help him catch those sneaky escaped souls from hell and steal the show while doing it.

2. Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Willow was always the smart one, complete opposite to Buffy, who's biggest boast is that she could hit things hard. The mighty slayer would have failed more times than she could count if it hadn't been for this adorable sidekick. Not only did Willow prove herself to be a great sidekick but she become a power to be reckoned with herself when she started to learn magic, and I know I'm not the only one who thought she was freaking badass when she turned evil for a little bit.

1. Barney from How I Met Your Mother
I wont say it, I wont stoop that low. You cant make me!
Barney Stinson is my winner for the best TV sidekick by a long way. He may have lost some of his awesomeness lately as you may know if you have been reading my 'Dash on...How I met Your Mother' series, but without him the show would have never got off its feet. Also, Ted would have lead one boring life cos' sometimes you've gotta grab life by the crack and lick the crap out of it! No matter how much the writers like to screw with his character, for me, Barney is, and will always be, Legen-wait for it-Dary...Legendary!!! (dammit!).

Other sidekicks worth mentioning
Bender- Futurama
Chuck Bass - Gossip girl
Bobby - Supernatural
Wash - Firefly
Sheldon - The Big Bang Theory
Deb - Dexter
Turk - Scrubs
Wilson - House
Kenzie - Lost girl

  1. *Heroes Spoilers*
The cool thing about Ando was that he eventually got superpowers while Hiro lost his, so the hero-sidekick roles were reversed for a little while. I stopped watching not long after that though so I'm not sure how that shake-up turned out..

  2. I love Sock from Reaper, he's the best thing about the show.

Loving the honorable mentions bit for Bender and Bobby (Supernatural). Thanks to Bobby the first word I want to call people is an idiot but pronounced id-jit
