Demo Station

Welcome to this birthday edition of Demo Station where I look at the Mass Effect 3 Demo which dropped on Valentines day.

I must confess to one of my gaming sins from the current generation: My name is Shep and I have never played any of the Mass Effect games, despite owning them!

Now that I have named and shamed myself let us delve into the Mass Effect 3 Demo and my first impressions of the universe belonging to my namesake.

First of all the mandatory FUCK YOU to EA Origins.

The demo began with me creating my version of Shepard. I chose to be a female sniper bad-ass with a heart of gold who would never leave a man behind. So far so good.

Apparently Shepard was nearly court martialed after Mass Effect 2 but now something big is heading its way to Earth. We meet up with the Admiral who proceeds to call me fat (the bastard! my Shepard is stunning no matter what any MAN thinks!) and tell me that we have to go to the council and discuss the impending doom, which then blew up.

So it begins that we now try to find our way to the Normandy (a spaceship) to be extracted and taken to the Citadel (another spaceship) with Shepard and the Admiral fighting side by side through Reapers. My Shepard would have shot this motherfucker on sight for calling her fat let alone working with him to do something silly like escape, but I'll make a mental note to get revenge later.

The controls and combat feel very similar to Gears of War and thanks to my time with that franchise I was quickly able to jump into the fray and start kicking reaper ass, the demo also does an excellent job of informing you of how to perform context sensitive actions and how to access the menus to utilise additional ammo types and power ups without feeling intrusive to the flow of the action.

The visuals were stunning (I didn't expect anything less from Bioware) with the vista's being ripped apart by the attacking Reaper forces and the sounds scheme complemented those visuals amazingly.

I am now pumped for Mass Effect 3, suppose I should really start playing the previous 2 entries into the series first.
